Our Story

When my daughter was 14, our family entered a world I knew nothing about. What began as  an eating disorder evolved into a complex mental health journey that would stretch our family in ways I could never have imagined.

Over the next several years, she was diagnosed with other disorders but none of them explained everything she was experiencing. Like many families, we were doing everything we knew to do: therapy, psychiatric appointments, research, support. We searched for help but the answers remained out of reach. Beneath the surface, her struggle was growing deeper than anyone realized.

After a particularly hard year of escalating symptoms, and with tremendous courage, my daughter told me she could not manage the thoughts anymore. She asked to be taken to the hospital where she was placed on a voluntary hold for her safety.

A few days after being discharged, she had to return again.

Those weeks were some of the most terrifying of my life. Eventually, after deeper evaluation, she received a proper diagnosis and a complete change in medication. With proper treatment and a 14-week intensive outpatient program, she began stabilizing.

Today, through extraordinary strength, resilience, and ongoing treatment, she is stable, happy, and has returned to living her life fully.

What I Learned

During those months, I lived in survival mode. There were long stretches without sleep. Constant safety monitoring. Medication adjustments. Insurance calls. Endless research. Alternative therapies. Emergency room visits. Enormous family strain. And constant fear I cannot fully describe.

But there was also something else. Connection.

We were lucky. My daughter was open with me about what she was feeling, even when those feelings were terrifying. Because she shared her thoughts instead of hiding them, we were able to act. I firmly believe that the strength of our relationship is one of the reasons she is alive today. And yet, even with that relationship, I often felt lost.

Along the way I met so many kids along our path who were struggling with very little parental support. Much of the time the lack of support was simply due to the fact that those parents were lost, too.

There are many resources focused on youth mental health, but very few focused on what parents need in order to effectively support their child.

Why Brighter Path Family Network Exists

Brighter Path Family Network was created to be the resource I desperately needed during those years.

It’s a place where parents can:

  • Understand what is happening with their child
  • Find evidence-based next steps
  • Navigate treatment options
  • Access practical crisis tools
  • Find a confidential support community
  • Speak openly without shame
  • Protect their child’s privacy while still getting help

Parents are the frontline support system for their children. When parents are informed, supported, and emotionally steady, outcomes improve.

We cannot remove the pain of mental illness but at least we can reduce the isolation and confusion surrounding it.

A Promise

I share our story with deep respect for my daughter’s privacy and strength.

This organization is not built on tragedy. It is built on resilience, relationship, and hope. These are what we hope to spread to other families navigating their own mental health struggles.
