Step by Step help for Parents who want to support their child’s mental health

If you’ve arrived here, you may be worried about your child’s mental health.
You might be noticing changes in their mood or behavior, or you may already be navigating a mental health crisis.
Many parents feel overwhelmed and unsure where to begin. That’s exactly why Brighter Path Family Network exists.
This page will help you find the information and support you need, step by step. Simply scroll to the section that describes the stage you’re currently in and click the button for guidance, support, and resources to get started.
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
BEFORE A CRISIS
Many mental health challenges begin gradually, and early support can make a big difference.
In this section you’ll find:
• Warning signs of mental health struggles in teens
• How to start conversations about mental health
• How to talk to your child about suicide
• How to build trust and open communication
DURING A CRISIS

Be prepared and understand the steps you can take can help keep your child safe in the event of a mental health crisis.
This section includes:
• What to do if your child is in crisis
• What to expect at the emergency room
• Creating a family safety plan
If your child is expressing suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or overwhelming distress, it is important to take these actions seriously and consider getting immediate help either from their mental health provider, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988), or call 911.
If you feel your child is a danger to themselves or others and you cannot guarantee their safety, dial 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
AFTER A CRISIS
The days and weeks after a mental health crisis can be emotionally exhausting for families. Parents often find themselves asking”What happens next?”
Here you’ll find guidance on:
• The first 30 days after a crisis
• Supporting your child at home
• Helping your child return to school
• Rebuilding stability for your family
You are not alone.
Supporting a child through mental health challenges can be deeply stressful and isolating. It’s important for parents to know that their mental health matters, too. Parents who are supported and informed can have a more positive impact on their child’s recovery.
In addition to resources on navigating their child’s mental health, Brighter Path Family Network offers support just for parents. Our parent guides are always available to read in our Parent Support section. We also host free virtual Parent Support Circles, where parents can connect with others facing similar challenges in a confidential and supportive space. Because a well-supported and informed parent is better equipped to keep showing up strong for their child.
